Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Regroup Emergency Alert System used for? What kind of messages are sent?

Regroup is used by the St. Mary’s County Department of Emergency Services (DES), along with partner agencies, to send urgent, time-sensitive alerts to the public.

  • Shelter-in-place notifications
  • Heavy police presence in an area
  • Sanitary sewer overflows
  • Evacuation notices
  • Other critical emergency updates

Regroup is not used for general information or advertisements. It is strictly for emergency notifications.

How will I receive messages through Regroup?

When you sign up, you must provide an address and a phone number. You may also add additional phone numbers and email addresses.

  • Messages are sent via phone call by default
  • You can opt in to receive text messages and emails through your account settings.

Alerts are sent based on location. Your address is used to determine which alerts you receive. If no address is provided, you will not receive alerts.

Will I recieve weather alerts through Regroup?

Yes. All Regroup subscribers receive severe weather alerts through the system. Regroup is integrated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which sends alerts directly for:

  • Tornado Warnings
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warnings
  • Flash Flood Warnings

These alerts are based on the address associated with your account.

I didn’t sign up for Regroup, but I am receiving notifications.

You may be receiving notifications for one of the following reasons:

  • If you were previously signed up for CodeRED, your information was automatically migrated to the Regroup system.
  • AT&T users were also enrolled through the AT&T Intrado service, which supports Next Generation 9-1-1 communications. These subscribers are annually enrolled in Regroup to help expand emergency notification coverage.

There is contact information or an address linked to my Regroup account that doesn’t belong to me.

This may have occurred during the transition from CodeRED to Regroup:

  • Duplicate accounts were combined during migration, both automatically and manually by Department of Emergency Services staff.
  • Accounts were considered duplicates if they shared the same name AND address or phone number. In some cases, accounts may have been merged incorrectly.
  • The previous CodeRED system did not allow users to update their information, so outdated contact details or addresses may still be associated with your account.

Is Regroup the same as CodeRED?

No. Regroup has replaced the CodeRED system and is now the official emergency alert platform used by St. Mary’s County DES.

CodeRED is no longer in use. In 2025, CodeRED experienced a cybersecurity incident and suspended its platform. There was no indication that subscriber data was compromised. To read more about the CodeRED incident, you can view the original press release here and the update here.
